PayPal Tanzania: How to Create PayPal Account, Receive Money & Withdraw to M-Pesa in Tanzania

Tanzania is the second biggest economy in East Africa and a lot of people are doing business online – paying for Facebook Ads, paying for courses, goods and services and also doing TikTok as a business.

All these online activities need international payment gateways like PayPal, Stripe etc. to pay and receive.

Among all the international options available, PayPal is crucial since it integrates in several apps and platforms. You need PayPal to get paid on TikTok in Tanzania, most donors prefer PayPal for security and data protection, unlike options like Western Union where one has to find a branch and fill in details to send money, PayPal is done on phone making it a preferred option for someone sending you money in Tanzania.

Moreover, when it comes to small payments like $10, even if one wanted to use Western Union or bank wire transfer, this money is too small. In fact on Western Union you can’t send that little money, for bank wire transfer, costs can be higher than the money you’re withdrawing. So PayPal is preferred because it charges a percentage and allows even sending $1.

Stripe is not supported in Tanzania – it would have been a great option for international money transfer. Card options are there in Tanzania but are not supported on apps and freelancing platforms.

So it takes us back to using PayPal – but how do you create a working PayPal in Tanzania?

PayPal Tanzania: Send-Only Restriction

Just like Uganda, Tanzania is partially restricted by PayPal. Your Tanzanian PayPal can send money but can’t receive. In East Africa, only Kenya can send and receive. So to receive in Tanzania, you must use a workaround.

1. If You Just Want to Send Money in Tanzania

If you just want to send money – to pay for Facebook Ads, courses, goods and services – create a Personal account, not a Business account.

Reason it should be personal is because a business account will be asked for business info, TIN, registration docs, yet in personal PayPal account, you won’t be asked. So no point to create a business account when all you want is to pay.

Steps to create a personal PayPal in Tanzania for paying:

  1. Go to paypal.com > Sign Up > Choose Personal
  2. Enter your real Tanzanian details – email, your name as on NIDA, phone number
  3. Link your card – you can use your bank Visa/Mastercard, Vodacom M-Pesa GlobalPay Virtual Card, or Airtel Virtual Card
  4. Verify your email
  5. You can now pay for services online from Tanzania

This account will work for paying, but cannot receive money.

2. If You Want to RECEIVE Money in Tanzania

This is where most Tanzanians get stuck. You need to setup a foreign PayPal account if you want to receive.

Process might involve buying a virtual line of a supported country and using key details of that foreign supported country you have chosen.

If you want a receiving PayPal account in Tanzania, you might use Kenya PayPal link to sign up or any other supported country like Dubai, South Africa, or Lesotho. Don’t use VPN please – VPN will get your account permanently limited. You might need to buy a virtual line online or from a friend to setup account as Dubai or Kenya.

The process might be complex to some and that’s why we offer these services – contact us for assistance.

WARNING: Creating a foreign account while in Tanzania is very risky. Your account can be suspended and your money gets frozen for 180 days if PayPal detects you are not living in that country. This is why most people avoid this.

Our Most Popular Service: We Receive PayPal On Your Behalf and Send to M-Pesa Tanzania

For some people who just want to receive one time or not often on PayPal, creating a foreign account is too much risk and stress.

We can receive on your behalf and send money to your Vodacom M-Pesa, Tigo Pesa, Airtel Money Tanzania.

Most people prefer this option because creating a PayPal account is risky in Tanzania, it can be suspended and your money gets frozen, so that’s why most people prefer us receiving on their behalf and we send them mobile money.

How it works:

  1. Contact us for rates – Tell us the amount you expect
  2. We give you a link you can use to share with the person sending you money
  3. Your client, donor, or friend pays to us via PayPal
  4. Most cases, payments below $100 are processed within 1-2 hours
  5. Then money is sent to your Vodacom M-Pesa / Tigo Pesa / Airtel Money
  6. You might need to fill in a form if it’s your first time dealing with us

We receive on behalf of people receiving:

  • Church donations via PayPal
  • Organization and NGO donations
  • Personal donations and family support
  • Small payments like $10, $20 that Western Union cannot send

This is perfect for small payments. Unlike bank wire where costs can be higher than money you’re withdrawing, PayPal charges a percentage and is ideal for small amounts.
